Family Violence: A societal ailment

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 50 percent of all women will experience physical violence in an intimate relationship and for 24 to 30 percent of those women the battering will be regular and on-going. Ninety-Five percent of all violence victims are women.

For nearly 30 years the Governor’s Office on Women’s Policy (OWP) has worked to combat and eradicate family violence. Today OWP stewards funding for 20 statewide programs in Louisiana which provide shelter, counseling and direct services to domestic violence victims (mostly women and children).

The execution of our efforts would not be possible without the help of our many cohorts such as: the Louisiana Women’s Policy and Research Commission, the Louisiana Women’s Foundation, the Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus (LLWC) and the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (LCADV). We sincerely thank the volunteers, legislators and local community leaders who help facilitate our efforts for the betterment, safety and empowerment of Louisiana women.

Defining Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence is characterized as a pattern of coercion used by one person to exert power and control over another person in the context of a dating, family or household relationship.*

Domestic violence happens to people of all ages, races, ethnicities and religions. It occurs in both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships. Economic or professional status does not indicate domestic violence.
